Optimise your US manufacturing footprint

Act today with a data-driven approach and secure localised manufacturing and supply chain opportunities in the US

USE DATA TO POWER YOUR SITE SEARCH

The vast geographical, cultural, and business complexities of the US are often overlooked when Swedish companies are looking to establish manufacturing and production sites and securing supply chains in the US. In a country roughly the size of Europe, where you establish and why are critical to securing long-term strategic growth. State and local conditions can influence how you connect to manufacturing specific supply chains, proximity to customers, and available local and regional incentives.

FOOTPRINT USA is a data analysis tool enabling Swedish companies to compare and understand how different business critical variables impact manufacturing operations. These variables include labour costs and availability, logistics and supply chain factors, and energy costs.

The current business and industrial landscape of the USA is being reshaped by global sustainability pressures, geo-political relations, and a turbulent world economy. The response by the Biden administration has been characterised by an aggressive spending agenda and a continuation of Made in America policies, requiring companies to evaluate their market presence to avoid risk and realise opportunities.

What Swedish companies thought they knew about the complex and diverse US market no longer holds true. While a presence in the market is now critical for many companies, it is essential that a decision with a decade-long impact is driven by data and facts that consider the multi-faceted variables that define individual opportunities, states, and industry sectors.

To help Swedish companies compare and understand how different business critical variables impact the ideal location for manufacturing operations, we have created an interactive data-driven tool called FOOTPRINT USA.

WhY manufacture in America? Why now?

Three key factors are behind the need for Swedish companies to establish and optimise a manufacturing footprint in the US; and the need for reacting and demanding to change is critical.

Demand for ‘Made in America’

Both B2B and B2C consumers view American made products as higher in quality and worthy of a premium price. This demand is impacting manufacturing across several sectors and supply chains, making Made in America is often required in public procurement.

Key takeway: Americans want American made products

Government agenda and incentives

The Biden administration has allocated more than USD 350 billion in tax incentives and direct investment, of note is the Inflation Reduction Act, to focus on protectionism and the climate. Relevant industries include electric mobility, energy storage, HVAC, electric grid infrastructure.

Key takeaway: Massive incentives are available for American made products

Reshoring for resilience

Learnings from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the geo-political tensions between the US and China have all heightened awareness for the need to minimise risk and reshoring is seen as the strongest strategy to build resilient supply chains while also taking advantage of public procurement policies.

Key takeaway: Current global trend of reshoring favours local producers

We can help you hit the bullseye, first time

Establishment or expansion in the USA requires a substantial financial and logistical commitment. It is imperative to understand, and then meet strategic priorities in securing manufacturing and supply chain opportunities.
Business Sweden can help Swedish companies build their entry strategy based on variables that will ensure footprint optimisation, reduce time to market, and minimise risk.

Our data-driven approach, strategic analysis, and operational support can help you answer key market critical questions:

Why regionalise now?

Will regionalisation save production time, minimise complexity and increase flexibility and control, and reduce overall business risk?

Business Sweden can help support with a strategic location search that will put you closer to both customers and suppliers, reducing lead times and costs for deliveries by cutting down on transport which supports in building resilient supply chains and positioning for the future. Our team will also assist you in finding relevant incentives as the move will make your establishment eligible for tax benefits and credits as well as grants.

How to achieve efficiency?

How will your location support your manufacturing objectives, the make or buy decision, how you grow, and where materials are sourced?

Business Sweden can connect you with local strategic partners to support in-house manufacturing, partnerships, and relevant suppliers in order to ensure an efficient supply chain and ramp-up. The localising process will future proof and mitigate geopolitical and protectionist trade policy risks, and can also help you meet your sustainability targets.

Where to locate?

How will you identify a specific geographical location for own production facilities that delivers proximity to partners and/or suppliers?

Business Sweden’s data and strategic analysis can help you pinpoint a location that aligns to infrastructure and logistics, labour force, and supplier network needs, delivers tax, legal, factory clearance and relevant incentives, shortening time to market.

Case study: Strategic site selection today for long-term growth

The challenge

Demand in the US for energy storage is expected to rise in the next decade. Our client, a Swedish energy storage company, recognised the imperative to establish local manufacturing and assembly in the US to meet market conditions, but also align with the political and consumer demand for products to be made in America.

Our approach

Business Sweden took a data-driven approach to assess the most attractive states based on key indicators including macro, labor market attractiveness and risks, logistics and supply chain, and high-level incentives. This analysis delivered a shortlist of states which then triggered a deeper assessment of counties/locations and example sites based on agreed criteria. Additionally, support regarding understanding the permit process for site establishment, and ‘Made in America’ classification were delivered.

The outcome

By delivering a tailored shortlist of suitable sites, our client is now able to accurately assess the options, knowing any specific site they view within this range will meet their strategic objectives. In phase two of the project, we will work together to deep-dive into options and select the final site.

OUR DATA-DRIVEN STRATEGIC APPROACH HELPS YOU MAXIMISE MANUFACTURING GROWTH

Across the USA, our local teams have carried out extensive data analysis, network and supplier mapping, and assessment of manufacturing and supply chain opportunities based on federal and state policies. We can use our local, state, and regional knowledge to help you take away the guess work and take your site location and expansion plans from speculation to high-return reality.
